Minecraft SMP servers, also known as Survival Multiplayer servers, take a regular Minecraft survival world and turn it into a multiplayer world with other players. The main goal is still to mine, build, explore, but with other players around you can team up, trade, build a base together, or end up against each other depending on the server. Many SMP servers keep things close to vanilla or only make small semi-vanilla changes, but others include features like land claiming, in-game economies, crates, trails, custom items, anti griefing, and more.
